Rug Doctor caters to the individual consumer who desires the do-it-yourself professional carpet cleaning experience for his/her own home, apartment, condominium or office. Rug Doctor – billed as "The Carpet Care Experts" – has been in business for over 35 years, renting out its powerful cleaning machines at over 33,000 retail locations. Today, the famous Rug Doctor machines are available for direct online purchase via the Rug Doctor website, which offers the following products and services:

Rug Doctor: What makes it different?

Rug Doctor – and that is a trademark name – is one of the big kahunas in the carpet cleaning business. Their famous slogan: "steaming mad at dirt" reverberates throughout consumer land. Rug Doctor was started in 1972 by Roger Kent, who created his first steam-based cleaning machine in his garage. Originally based in Fresno, California, Rug Doctor moved its corporate headquarters to Plano, Texas, in 1998. Today, the company is an international player in the lucrative carpet cleaning business, boasting of production facilities in Fenton, Missouri, and the United Kingdom, plus a number of warehouse distribution points and service centers in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Australia and some 20 other countries.

Rug Doctor is a trusted name in the business. Their rental machines and accompanying cleaning products can be found in over 33,000 retail outlets, including Ace Hardware, IGA, Dollar General, True Value, Alco, R&P Lumber, Menards, Dominicks, U-Haul, Food 4 Less, Dierbergs, Schnucks, Shop 'n Save, et al.

Rug Doctor machines are known for their durable construction and reliability. They're ruggedly built to kick butt and take names in the dirty, creepy-crawly carpet cleaning wars. Among their features:

  • 1.74 horsepower vacuum motors
  • 28-32 psi pumps
  • 3.1-4.8 gallon recovery tank capacity
  • 36-44 pounds in weight
  • Vibrating brushes and single/dual pump jets
  • 120 volt electrical requirement
  • 12-foot hand tool hose length
Rug Doctor vs. primary competitors (sites similar to Rug Doctor)

Rug Doctor has competition in the home/office carpet cleaning business. The Plano, Texas-based company's principal competition comes from Bissell, The Kirby Company, Hoover, Vapamore and several other venues. Bissell's ProHeat 2X Deep Cleaning Series has been cited by some as a cheaper alternative to Rug Doctor. Through anecdotal reviews, however, Rug Doctor scores higher marks for more solid construction and longevity. "I find that the Bissell breaks every couple years, and has to be replaced," opined one customer.

Both Hoover and Vapamore also offer cheaper alternatives to Rug Doctor. The upstart Vapamore features the Vapamore MR-100 Primo steam cleaner at a price of $299-$399 and backed by a lifetime warranty. It features a 1.6 liter stainless steel boiler, a 1500 watt water heater and adjustable steam output. Its makers tout that it "kills germs, dust mites, mold and mildew" and that it is an "extremely effective bed bug treatment," all of which is accomplished without the use of harsh chemicals.

The venerable Rug Doctor has a number of things working in its favor when stacked up against its competitors. For one thing, a potential customer can simply rent Rug Doctor from a vast number of retail outlets and conduct his or her own trial run before deciding to make a full-blown purchase. Also, Rug Doctor offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, a 5-year manufacturer's warranty and free shipping on full pay machines in the contiguous United States.

Rug Doctor, which has been awarded the coveted Gold certification from the national trade association the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI), also offers refurbished machines at a sale price of $425. These machines are not reconditioned rental models, the company stresses, but are simply new machines returned by customers via their 30-day money-back program.

Rug Doctor: Pricing & packages

Rug Doctor offers four different models for sale on their website. Their most expensive machine is the heavy duty Rug Doctor Wide Track, which is priced at $749.94. Their remaining models are the Rug Doctor Mighty Pro Plus ($599.93), Rug Doctor Mighty Pro X3 ($599.93) and Rug Doctor Mighty Pro Ready Pack X3 ($599.99). Depending on which machine one orders, the purchase price also includes a host of extras, such as a universal hand tool and hose, Oxy-Steam carpet cleaner, urine eliminator, upholstery cleaner, odor remover and spot & stain wipes.

When compared to the competition, here are some sample retail prices from the latter for comparable models:

Bissell

  • Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine - $599.99
  • ProHeat 2X Deep Cleaning Series - $199.99-279.00

Rug Doctor: Customer reviews & comments

With almost 40 years in business Rug Doctor has established an excellent reputation in the carpet cleaning field. Here are several customer reviews from around the Web:

"I rented Rug Doctors for years, and if I had the chance to buy one 20 years ago I would have been ahead financially. This is a pro-model machine. High pressure jets shoot hot solution into carpet. Powerful vacuum removes solution and dirt. The carpet cleaner has a vibrating brush to loosen dirt from carpet fibers. Does a great job at cleaning carpets. It does take some muscle, but now that I own one I don't have to do the whole house in 1 day so I can return the rental. Doing a few rooms at a time is easier on the old body...This thing is built like a tank. I will be leaving it in my will to my children." - EAMO, Massachusetts

"If Lady MacBeth had this machine, she would not have a problem getting the spots out of her carpets. On the other hand (lol) it may not have taken the blood off her hands. I have used this on two rooms so far, and using the urine spot remover, have restored some grungy looking areas to a very clean state." - NVRick, Pahrump, Nevada

"Just returned the Doctor. For me, the machine cleaned well, but not better than the Bissell ProHeat, which is sold for 1/2 the cost. I found the Doctor cumbersome to use, very awkward to navigate around things, and under things. The bulkiness of the machine, and needing to pull it backwards resulted in slower cleaning times as compared to the Bissell. Also, small nook areas and corners are not accessible due to the bulkiness." - Bacho, Mountain View, California

In general, Rug Doctor scores high marks around the Web for durability, great suction and cleaning power, effective hand tool and no assembly required. As for the cons, customers cited the machine's weight (36-44 pounds), awkward connections and loudness. The latter might scare kitty or Rover – or maybe even amuse them – but it's probably best to keep the pets outside when mighty Rug Doctor begins to roll like one of General Patton's tanks.

“My Opinion of Rug Doctor”

I have used Rug Doctor. It was the only rental rug shampoo machine available in my area. I hated it. If you want to change the water, clean it out, and add new rug cleaner every time you turn around, clean away with this machine. I spent more time doing this than I did cleaning my carpet.
